I have decided that rather being my usual ignorant self, I’ll change to become an observer and understand the so-called "subtleties".Since the past few days, I have been making an effort to understand a few people around me and am trying to become a lot more aware. Everyday I see this guy at the station with really big boots with his laces open, with a giant dollar sign belt which rotates arbitrarily each time he moves, torn and tattered jeans which I thought for sure were borrowed from a coal miner in the 70’s and a baseball cap pointing westward. I sometimes wonder if I am from the same era or am absolutely oblivious about fashion and its vagaries. And the answer was always the latter. Emulating someone, rather than being oneself were unequivocal signs of attention seeking behaviour in my opinion. It is ubiquitous, omnipresent. Colouring my hair green just because some ‘cuckoo’ on Television lost his marbles or piercing my nipples just because ‘crazy-Joe’ believes in pain being the allayer does manifest how low my self-esteem is. In a bid to be distinct from the pack, we make efforts towards being somebody whose vague image is embedded in our mindset. It shows that since I am not contended with myself, I would rather not be me and be someone who I think is cool. The examples are innumerable.Maybe knowing oneself better should help in making the right choices. It should keep you away from the ‘pea-brains’ who think they are different who in actuality are clueless about themselves and their standing in the society.
Cheers!
great start!...you have a great vocab...i had to look up some of the words in the dictionary! good going!
ReplyDeletethanks a lot :)
ReplyDeleteso basically...this guy is getting attention from people like you and me...but isnt that what hes trying to do??you may judge him of being out of character in an extremely derogatory way but its just that every1 in this world is trying to seek attention in some way or the other...u,me,the guy at the station...and one does what they have to do to be happy..thats what we strive for right... a place in this world...and for some...its being someone else...for some..its just being a cynic..but im with you on this...im a cynic as well...coz u n me r too self conscious to be wearing a giant dollar sign belt which rotates arbitrarily everytime we move

...i might go for the green streak though...although purple's my colour...
impressive Nambiar
Instead of generalizing attention seeking behaviour, it would be more suited if we prudently classified it.
ReplyDeleteNow,I would definitely style my hair to grab a woman's attention but I would never shave my head and tattoo my dog's name on it. This post was inclining more towards the kind of people who belonged to the 'extreme' category, who would go to outrageous lengths just to behold the 'outlaw' tag. This choice that is made is not for anything else but to raise their self esteem which they think is lower than most people around them.
thanks for commenting..really appreciate it :)
I had a slight inkling that you would comment on this topic..haha
keep posting.
XoXoXo
fashion was never only functional.... For time immemorial it was a mode for Self Expression.Having clarity about who you are and what you want (and why you want it), empowers you to consciously and actively make those wants a reality. Otherwise, you’ll continue to get “caught up” in your own internal dramas and unknown beliefs, allowing unknown thought processes to determine your feelings and actions.Your appearance delivers right or wrong messages about your identity. I don't believe you have to be super tall or a super thin model, to be a super-model: you just need be to noticed and acknowledged for your own unique style and qualities.Fashion is an extended part of one's personality. A person is recognized on a social basis, through his sense of style and class. Fashion, as in clothing and trends, largely depend on one's personal expression and penchant for style. People who lack in self confidence, often get perplexed and blindly follow the current fashion trends, irrespective of suitability, just to avoid being termed as a "fashion disaster" or "outdated" among the social circles. So, fashion and style should reflect one's own persona and worth.
ReplyDeleteawsm thoughts mr nambiar----n vocab is so impressive...

ReplyDeleteI can totally relate to the guy at the station. Everybody's perception abt themselves is good(read:extraordinary) and so is his. You, i.e: Nikhil Nambiar, think he belongs to the "extreme" category whereas he, on the other hand, may be thinking your dressing sense is "extremely" boring. Also, you should know by now that the word "cool" has relative definitions. You like your plain tee and jeans because it seems cool to you, am i right? The no.of times that i've been at the station waiting for a train and wondering if i look 'hatke' enough to be noticed are countless. And you can call that low self esteem but i'd like to believe i'm not the only having those thoughts out there.
And yes, one more thing, that was an awesome start!
:) It is quite debatable.
